Governor Inos Issues NCD Emergency Directive for the CNMI

On April 18, 2013, CNMI Governor Iloy Inos signed an Emergency Directive on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs.)

As the Saipan Tribune reports, Governor Inos ackowledged the grave impact of non-communicable diseases on the Commonwealth by signing the emergency directive, which seeks to combat these diseases. In the ceremony, which was held before health officials, lawmakers, and representatives of various government agencies and groups, the governor ordered the establishment of a CNMI NCD Emergency Committee within 30 days. The committee will be tasked to oversee the implementation of NCD-related strategies across various sectors.

In addition to the NCD Declaration, Governor Inos also signed a document supporting a new health campaign entitled, “Let’s Move! Walk for a Healthier Marianas!” Through the program, government employees are granted one hour of administrative leave to participate in formal exercise activities. In his letter, Governor Inos noted that “This is a great outreach opportunity to promote healthier living and I commend [the Commonwealth Health Corporation] staff for endeavoring in this worthwhile initiative.”
