Overview of the PIHOA Laboratory Network

PIHOA Lab Network consists of 10 hospital/public health labs in the US-affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI).The Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) – regulated labs in the US flag territories of American Samoa, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam Public Health Lab; and the non-regulated hospital labs in the freely-associated states of Federated States of Micronesia (Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae, Yap), Palau and the Republic of the Marshall Islands (Majuro and Ebeye).

A total of about 110 laboratory professionals work in these laboratories with varying levels of laboratory capacities. Most labs provide laboratory services ranging from phlebotomy, clinical chemistry, hematology, immune-hematology/blood banking, serology, microbiology; with cytology and histology capabilities in a few labs only. Except for Guam Public Health Laboratory, all other hospital labs play a dual role in providing both clinical and public health lab services in their own jurisdictions.
