PIHOA Regional Laboratory
Formation of a PIHOA public health laboratory system among the six US associated Pacific Islands whereby cholera, typhoid, measles, influenza, leptospirosis, and dengue can be rapidly isolated and diagnosed. This work is in concert with the Pacific Public Health Surveillance Network Coordinating Body and the World Health Organization. This effort has seen or is presently experiencing an upgrade in Guam’s Department of Public Health and Social Services Public Health Laboratory (L2 lab), an assessment of the public health laboratory capacity in the six US Pacific Islands (L1 labs), and the addition of a PIHOA Regional Laboratory Coordinator who will be responsible for overseeing the Emergency Disaster Fund, training, and coordination of the transport and identification of the above six isolates, and other dangerous biological specimens.
This development includes bringing on Board a Regional Laboratory Coordinator who will serve as a liaison between (L1) hospital laboratories in the Pacific and (L2) reference laboratories in Guam and Hawaii, s well as providing training, quality assurance, and other needed technical support to these clinical and reference laboratories.
