April 16, 2024 (Atlanta, Georgia) – Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Programs from Guam, CNMI, American Samoa, and Palau were in Atlanta last week for a Maternal Mortality Review Meeting. PIHOA’s Amy St. Pierre Pacific Public Health Program (PPHFP) Fellows Cameron Murphy from Guam and Meghan Paletaoga from American Samoa had the opportunity to participate in the meeting. Statistics show Hawai’i and the U.S.-Affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI) to have the highest rate of maternal mortality rates in the U.S., with disproportionately high rates of USAPI mothers dying during pregnancy or within one year of giving birth. The MCH programs across the USAPIs are stepping up and partnering with the Centers for Disease ControlÊ»s (CDC) Maternal Mortality Prevention Team to implement Maternal Mortality Review Committees that drive impactful change and prevent maternal deaths!
